It's interesting how we think in terms of "them and us"; only in this piece the author, a white man, is siding with "them" rather than with his own side/tribe or race.

Why? Because in overreaction to the evils committed by white men (especially slavery, Jim Crow and the Holocaust, despite the latter being white on white) it is now deemed a moral virtue for them to deny and despise their own white race. And with moral virtue comes personal advantage, privilege and power.

I'm not defending the evils committed by my own white race, put pointing out how an ideology of white racial self-denial and self-contempt now serves the state and its liberal elites as an instrument of socio-political intimidation and control, just as medieval church ideology once did.

It's the age-old strategy of “divide and rule”, with America's white elites demonstrating their moral superiority, and thus right to rule, over both white majority and all the ethnic minorities, by themselves embracing this self-destructive ideology, and not just of white America, but of American society at large.

It is exactly the kind of overreaction the NYT itself warns about in an editorial response to the Paris terror attacks in November 2015:

“In the reaction and overreaction to terrorism [evil] comes the risk that society will lose its way.”

The West's elites have indeed lost their way (see The West's Overreaction to Nazism).

"Electing such a man [as Donald Trump] would be insanity."  

I'm inclined to agree. But electing Clinton, who, like her husband and all so-called "progressives",  is committed to an ideology of white racial self-denial and self-contempt, would also be insane - certainly for white America.

In overreaction to the evil of the white supremacism of Jim Crow, mainstream America (especially in academic circles) went to the opposite extreme of white self-denial and self-contempt.

It is exactly the kind of overreaction that the Editorial Board itself warned its readers about in response, The Price of Fear, to the Islamic terror attacks in Paris last November:

“In the reaction and overreaction to terrorism [evil] comes the risk that society will lose its way.”

It wasn't just an overreaction to Jim Crow, but also, and probably more so, to the evil of Nazism and the Holocaust, which white people were also responsible for and Jewish academics (although white themselves) especially traumatised by.

This overreaction is understandable, but urgently needs to be recognised and understood, because it has caused, not just America, by western civilisation at large, to badly lose their way (see BLOG)

Not that we were on a good, sustainable course before hand. But it is preventing us from finding such a course, which I elaborate on HERE.

So long as Democrats and "progressives" remain beholden to an ideology of white racial self-denial and self-contempt, Trump will continue to find support amongst European Americans, as well as amongst more enlightened non-whites, who realise that such an ideology is self-destructive, not just for whites, but for society at large.

On most matters I agree with Democrats and liberals far more than I do with Republicans and conservatives, but not when it comes to the left's denial of and contempt for their own white race, which they dismiss as a "social construct" only of importance to "bigots" and "racists" like myself.

Race is NOT a "social construct" (except when you try dividing closely related peoples from the same subcontinent into different races, as the Nazis insanely did), but REAL and important. Not in the way that racial supremacists believe it is, but because central to any deep and meaningful sense of both personal and group, identity.

If you liberals insist on the white race being assimilated into the melting pot a globalised humanity, millions are going to vote for Trump, or ANYONE, who seems to offer an alternative. And if voting doesn't work, there will be civil war further down the line.

Is that what you liberals want, another Civil War? Of course not, but that is where the overreaction to Nazism and the Holocaust, embodied in your ideology of white racial self-contempt, is driving us (see BLOG in which I elaborate).

Understandably, many white Americans are not happy seeing themselves being reduced to an ethnic minority in the country their own forefathers founded and very largely made the huge success it has been (notwithstanding its failings), but the "liberal left" has no understanding for this unhappiness, condemning it as an expression of "white supremacism".

Why should white America share the liberal-left's contempt for its own race, when they have every reason not to?

Where does this contempt come form and what purpose does it serve?

It is, I suggest, an OVERREACTION to the evils of European (white) imperialism, slavery, Jim Crow, Apartheid and, above all, to Nazism and the Holocaust.

This overreaction was understandable, as is the purpose that it now serves, which is as an instrument of socio-political intimidation, rewards, punishments, manipulation and control, just as medieval church ideology once did.

It is the age-old strategy of all states, even democratic ones, of “divide and rule”, dividing society into a morally superior, now supposedly "colour-blind", elite and the morally inferior, naturally (human nature being what it is) less colour-blind, masses, who must submit to the authority of and domination by their "moral superiors".

To my pleasant surprise, my comment was approve and published by the NYT (LINK). This is the longer, revised version I was intending to post here in its stead:

"Trump can call for a police state pogrom against 11 million people and be rewarded, because a majority of Republican caucusgoers are white, native-born and believe that electing a demagogue will make American white again."

The contempt which "progressives" like Timothy Egan show for their own race is breath-taking.

They can’t express such contempt for other races, of course, but only for their own race, which, ironically and paradoxically, reinforces their sense of moral superiority as “anti-racists".

They don't see it themselves, because they live in an ideological bubble, their views reinforced my fellow "progressives", who see any co-ethnics failing to share their sense of racial self-denial and  self-contempt as "white supremacists".

How is one to understand such blindness and madness on the part of people convinced that THEY are the enlightened ones?  It is their own sense of being enlightened and morally superior, of course, which blinds them. Most of them mean well, which is why I refuse to see them as enemies. They are just misguided. Which is how they see people like ME, of course: misguided, "hateful" and full of "white supremacy".

I guess we are ALL deluded and misguided to some extent. But I'm not hateful or full of white supremacy. For better and for worse, I identify with my own race, which seems to me a natural and healthy thing to do. Denying and despising one's own race, as "progressives" are ideologically bound to do, strikes me as unnatural, unhealthy and pretty perverse.

I want to enlighten them, but they are convinced that I am the one in need of enlightenment, i.e. who should embrace THEIR ideology of racial self-denial and self-contempt. But I'm damned if I will. I have too much racial self-respect.

I have also discovered, I believe, the cause of their unnatural and unhealthy attitude of racial self-denial and self-contempt, which began as an understandable OVERREACTION (something the NYT itself warns of an editorial following the Paris attacks) to Nazism and the Holocaust, and which I elaborate on HERE.

The liberal left has screwed white America with it ideology of white racial self-denial, self-contempt and yes, self-hatred - a grotesque overreaction to European imperialism, Jim Crow, Apartheid and, of course, Nazism.

It was the kind of overreaction which the Editorial Board itself warns about in a recent editorial, The Price of Fear": “In the reaction and overreaction to terrorism comes the risk that society will lose its way."

Western society has indeed lost its way, led by the "progressive" liberal left, and Donald Trump is a natural response to that, which the liberal left seeks to demonise.

I'm not a fan of Donald Trump, but I'm even less a fan of the liberal left's ideology of white racial self-denial and self-contempt, which it urgently needs to recognise for what it is: part of the age-old strategy of “divide and rule”, dividing society into a morally superior, now supposedly "colour-blind", (white) elite and the morally inferior, naturally (human nature being what it is) less colour-blind, (still predominantly white) masses, who must submit to the authority of and domination by their "moral superiors".

Western Europe has had mass poor-world immigration and DIVERSITY imposed on it by its ruling elites, who have suppressed all objections (no matter how valid) as "bigoted" or "racist".

In Britain, my own country, this has resulted in native (white) Britons being reduced to an ethnic minority in large swathes of our major cities, with the prospect of us becoming an ethnic minority in the country as a whole before today's teenagers reach retirement age.

And THIS, our ruling elites expect us to embrace and celebrate!

I have come to realise that "celebrating DIVERSITY" is nothing less than Orwellian newspeak for native Britons (and white people everywhere) to celebrate our own ethnic displacement (white flight), replacement, and ultimate demise . . .

I know, it's happening in America too, where whites are not the native, but the founding population, who have largely shaped the country.

It seems to me that the West, following American leadership, has fallen prey to a self-destructive ideology of white racial self-denial, self-contempt and self-hatred, a pathological overreaction, I suggest, to the shame many whites feel (myself included) for western imperialism, slavery, Jim Crow, Apartheid and Nazism, which now serves our elites as an instrument of socio-political intimidation, rewards, punishments, manipulation and control, just as medieval church ideology once did: LINK to blog in which I elaborate.
